Travel within Central Africa is not as scary as it sounds but it is within Central Africa where you will find Africa in its raw form, completely uncommercialised or changed by modern tourism and most outside influences.
1.By car from Bangui, the capital of theCentral African Republic. Travelling down to Bayanga by car from Bangui is one of the many routes to get to Dzangha-SanghaNational Park and Sangha Lodge. Vehicles can be hired with drivers from one of several operators in Bangui. We recommend to do this drive in 2 legs with a stopover at Ngotwe, a national park project with very comfortable accommodation at Encampment Le Buffel Rouge. However the trip can be done in one very long day's drive with an early departure from Bangui and in good condition
2.Small aircraft from Bangui: A quicker and more convenient way, is to charter a small aircraft from Bangui to Bayanga. Approximately 1 hour's flight, the cost depends on the aircraft size and is from €3500 upwards for an 8 seater plane. Aircraft charters need to be arranged well before the expected dates of departure.
3.Flight and boat fromBrazzaville, capital of the Rep.of Congo: It is possible to fly from Brazzaville to Ouesso in the north of the country on a scheduled Trans-AirCongo flight and from there, with the proper prior arrangements the Sangha Lodge boat can collect you and transfer you upriver to the lodge. This is the most popular route.
4.Over land witha local tour operator from Yaounde or Douala, in Cameroon: Travel overland with a stopover in the towns of Bertoua and Yakadouma to Libongo on the Sangha river where with prior arrangement the Sangha Lodge boat can collect you and transfer you upriver to the lodge.
5.Flight and boat fromLibrevilleinGabon:It is possible to charter a plane directly to Bayanga or to Ouesso and from there transfer to Bayanga using the Sangha Lodge Pirogue.
6.Overland using public transport from Cameroon:The cheapest way to get to the lodge is with public transport via Cameroon:
You can take a bus from Douala or Yaounde to Bertoua and stay overnight in Bertoua. The trip takes around 6 hours from Yaoundé.
Take a taxi Brusse to Yakadouma and overnight there Trip takes around 7 or 8 hrs.
Take another Taxi Brusse from Yakadouma to Libongo: 5 or 6 hrs.
Clear immigration there and then ask for a local moterbike taxi to take you to a village a little way upriver called Bella: 15 minutes.
Here you can get a pirogue across to the CentralAfreicaRepublic border at Lidjombo. This is a 10 minute boat ride.
From there we can arrange a moterbike or pirougue: dependant on your budget. This takes around 2 hours by boat or 3 hours by moterbike.
Note: nothing is cheap in Central Africa, but if you are prepared to do that route it is possible.
